BSA Oil Cap. In BSA’s 1939 parts list as 66-8317 Using eBay parting tool to do turning.
I have made and supplied a number of these caps now.
I understand that the cap was in BSA’s 1939 parts list as 66-8317 - used on all versions of B21, B23, B24, B25, B26, M20, M22, M23, M24, but this I am unable to verify.
Caps are made in aluminium in a cnc lathe and then a cnc mill.
Lathe is a Hercus PC200 and the mill is a Hercus DTM 320
Process includes turning with an eBay parting tool. Threading 16 TPI 60 degree thread. Boring using. Sumitomo FC Insert.
Milling serrations in the cap with a cnc milling machine.

I would imagine that the issue with your spindle is either the encoder, or the connections to the encoder that are a bit dodgy. It's as if it thinks it's in the right place then doesn't so moves a bit, and so on. Of course could be the electronics gone a bit funny. Perhaps an electrical noise issue?

    • @smallcnclathes

Hi Olly, the minimum speed pots in the Minarik spindle driver will not go low enough to make the spindle stop. It has worked ok for years, but some time ago now the maximum speed became higher without the driver being adjusted. Since then it has been impossible to get the spindle to stop properly. Thanks for your comment. Will keep it in mind next time I have a tech here to look at it. Nogel

    • @ollysworkshop
      @ollysworkshop 7 дней назад

Noisy pots are a genuine problem, especially on old ones. You could try spraying them with contact cleaner and wiping them back and forward to try and clean them up. They are just a metal wiper on a carbon track (usually). Otherwise just replace them, they won't cost much.

Nice! Im just so in love what that lathe of yours - I even love it more because of some of the flaws =D We do a lot of work in 2011 aluminium - it cuts wonderful compared to 6082. However 2011 CAN corrode a bit in my experience if water gets to sit on it for longer periods.

it's because when entry angle is too small, the chip thinning takes effect - the chip is then too thin for chipbreaker to work, you must either add feed or increase entry angle close to 85-95 degrees (you currently have 90° - 5° tool clearance + 35° tool angle = the chip is thinned close by 50%)

    • @smallcnclathes

@@smallcnclathes yes, when you turn normally "from right to left", the entry angle is 90° + 5° holder clearance = 95° but when you turn "from left to right" or feed right hand tool leftward, the entry angle is 90° - 5° holder clearance - 35° insert = 50° i think in English it's called "Angle of adjustment of the main cutting edge χ" - good for chip thinning when you are heavy roughing parts, basically with same D.O.C the chip is distributed among larger area of the edge, thus spread the cutting forces on larger area the downside to this are huge radial forces and that chip breakers often stop to work because the chip becomes too thin

Machinist with larger machines won’t notice. 6061 is just really difficult for small machines, as it needs decent depth of cut and rapid speeds to control the chip flow as you saw in this video. This is a tough one. The grey on white looks a heck of a lot more like a modern CAM software simulation... but the full white background color scheme and low resolution make it a little harder to just choose which one is better. A ton of people are going to pick the blue on black because the black background is way more friendly to look at on a 50" big screen TV than the eye searing white of an old full white Windows background. But the grey on white simulation is actually more intuitive to understand at a glance as it's more in line with modern user interfaces. Go with whatever gets more votes! I'll vote the grey.

I just need to find a way to make narration less onerous. I am going to try just talking without striving to get it "right" as much as I do. LOL. The dos does not default to blue, that's all there is! Unless of course you know of a way to get an alternate colour scheme in DOS. You know it may be one of those times when after using a piece of software for years and you have a "How did I not know that" moment. I think we have all been there. I am going to have a go at just talking and unless it is a total screw up just leave it as it is. As I said that short video took 36 narration clips for me to be happy with it. So there will be umms and ahhs and stopping while I think of what I want to say next. Just have to see how it goes. Thanks for your comment. Nigel I just checked out your channel, how on earth can a channel with no content have 5 subscribers?? That must be some sort of Magic!

My wife had some content up with my son playing with trains. Got a bit creepy so we pulled the videos. I do appreciate the effort it takes. I thought that you sounded very natural when you narrated the videos and didn't realize it was so time consuming. No I don't know how to change the DOS colour. You read too much into the "default" part of my comment. 😁 Thanks for the reply.

I agree, it does, has a cleaner look about it. BUT does it provide a better look at the simulation? I always use the blu, because as you know, the dos software is blue with not other choice.

Thank You. It is the one I normally use, probably because it is the same as the dos software and I use both.
